Vacation, Leave & Sickness Guide

You can read everything you need to know about vacation, leave and sickness here.

Working is important, but staying healthy is even more so. In the Netherlands, you have clear rights and rules when it comes to vacation, reservations and illness. In this guide, we explain how it works: from vacation days and leave to continued payment during illness and what happens in the event of an accident at work.

Vacation days: your right to time off

Everyone who works in the Netherlands accrues vacation days. This starts from your first day of work.

  • For a 40-hour full-time work week, you are legally entitled to 20 vacation days per year
  • Do you work part-time? Then you accrue vacation days proportionately.
  • You can take single days or schedule longer periods, always in consultation with your supervisor.

Your vacation days are paid for, so you simply receive your salary while enjoying your time off.

Reservations, vacation pay and more

In addition to vacation days, you also accrue reservations on. You'll see these reflected on your paycheck.

Vacation money
Standard 8% of your gross pay. This is usually paid out in May, but you can have it paid out in between.
Vacation Days
Unused days are kept as reserves and paid out when you leave employment.
Holidays and other reservations
Depending on your collective bargaining agreement, there may be additional reservations.

Good to know: reservations are your money, built up from your wages.

Continued sick pay

Even if you become ill, you are entitled to continued payment in the Netherlands.

  • If you call in sick according to the rules, you will be paid (part of) your wages.

  • Exactly how much that is depends on the collective bargaining agreement and the law. Often this is a minimum of 70% of your salary.

  • Your paycheck will simply go through Job Invest, as normal.

Important: If you wish to call in sick, always call our back office (073 711 3712) between 07:00-08:00 and 13:00-14:00. Please also let your employer know that you are not coming.

Company doctor and occupational health and safety service

Are you sick for a longer period of time? Then you may be invited by the company doctor Whether the health and safety service.

  • They assess whether you can work (partially) and what guidance is needed.
  • Participation is mandatory, so together we ensure that you can return to work as quickly and responsibly as possible.
  • The company doctor can also advise on adjustments in your work or reintegration.

Accident in the workplace

An accident can always happen, even if you work safely.

  • Report an accident direct with your supervisor and with Job Invest.
  • We provide registration, medical assistance and contact with the occupational health and safety service.
  • Safety comes first: together we look at what went wrong and how to prevent it in the future.

Who is responsible?

In the Netherlands, the employer where you work is responsible for a safe work environment.

That means good instructions, protective equipment and safe machinery. If something does happen, it is always investigated whether the employer has taken adequate measures.

Costs and insurance: Medical costs and counseling are in principle covered by the employer's health insurance and insurance. Therefore, you do not have to bear these costs yourself. However, it is important that the accident is officially registered so that all reimbursements can be properly arranged.

Good to know: in serious accidents, the Labor Inspectorate be informed.
