Living in the Netherlands as a labour migrant:
this is what you need to arrange

Are you coming to work in the Netherlands through Job Invest? Then naturally, you’ll want a good place to live as well. Living in a new country can be exciting, but with the right information it’s mainly a great step forward. Here you’ll read everything you need to know: from housing according to SNF standards to applying for a DigiD and registering with the municipality.

Housing according to SNF standards

We believe it’s important not only that you have a job, but also that you can live comfortably and safely. That’s why we work with housing that meets the SNF standards (Flex Housing Standards Foundation).. That means:

  • Safe and tidy living spaces
  • Sufficient privacy and living space
  • Hygiene and fire safety in order
  • Regular inspections by independent authorities

Want to know everything about the requirements? Then take a look at the SNF website.

Types of housing

At Job Invest, we make sure our temporary workers have a pleasant and safe place to live during their working period in the Netherlands. We offer houses, apartments and hotels that you share with other Job Invest employees. This way, you live together with other colleagues, making it easier to meet new people and share experiences.

Would you rather live alone or find something yourself that suits you better? That’s of course also possible. Many homes and rooms are offered on websites such as funda.co.uk or other rental platforms. This allows you to search for housing that matches your personal preferences and budget.

What to do if you have problems in your housing

Is something broken in your housing? Or do you have questions or complaints?

  • Always report this immediately via Customer Support via our P4F app or email to housing@jobinvest.nl

  • In case of emergencies (such as leakage or power outages), you can call the phone number listed on the house rules board in your accommodation.

  • Follow the house rules: leave everything clean, don’t cause disturbance and report any damage immediately.

This way, we work together to keep your housing clean and livable – for you and your housemates.

Here's how to apply for a DigiD:

  1. Go to www.digid.nl.
  2. Request an account with your personal information.
  3. Within a few days, you will receive a code by mail to activate your DigiD.

What do you need to arrange when you move to the Netherlands?

In addition to a good home, there are a number of things you mandatory must arrange to live and work in the Netherlands. Check them out here:

Registering with the municipality

As soon as you come to live in the Netherlands, you must register at the municipality where you are staying within 5 days. This is required to receive your BSN (Citizen Service Number). Without a BSN you cannot receive salary, take out health insurance or apply for allowances. The BSN is your key to everything you need to arrange in the Netherlands. Get health insurance

Everyone who works in the Netherlands must have basic health insurance. This insures you for doctor visits, hospital care and medication. The average premium is around €130 per month. Often you are entitled to care allowance, a government contribution that reimburses part of your premium. Compare health insurance through Independer

Tax liability

Once you work and earn income in the Netherlands, you are liable to pay taxes here. That means that on your salary payroll tax and contributions pays. In most cases, your employer or employment agency will automatically deduct this and remit it to the IRS. However, you must report this annually yourself through your tax return.

Supplements

Not mandatory, but you will probably miss out on money if you don't use it. In the Netherlands you are often entitled to care allowance or rent allowance. You can apply for it through the tax authorities. It is smart to check immediately after your registration what you are entitled to. More info through the Internal Revenue Service
